NFL Hitting The Stretch Run

As the NFL season comes to a close there are 5 things that I have noticed.

1. The Patriots are not as much of a lock for the Super Bowl as people think. I know that they destroyed the Steelers, Jets, and Bears, but lets be real. I still do not trust the Patriots defense. The Jets and Bears have very average offenses. There is a formula to beat them. Run the football, hug up on their receivers and get after Brady. They may very well win the Super Bowl this year, but there is still a lot of football yet to play.

2. Michael Vick and Tom Brady are the only 2 players that should be mentioned for MVP. These 2 QBs get it done in different ways, but they are the best at how they do it. No two players (other than Peyton Manning ) mean more to their team and then these two. Both are having excellent seasons and a Super Bowl match up between these two would be classic.

3. When did we start teaching kids that leading with your head was the proper way to tackle. As a former player that has suffered multiple concussions, I can assure you that the helmet is protective equipment, not a weapon. Not only is it dangerous for the player being speared, but the player doing the spearing as well. I've never seen so many tacklers getting hurt with neck and head injuries as I've seen this year. God provided you with shoulder pads for a reason. Use them!!!

4. New Orleans gets no love. I don't think that I've ever seen a defending Super Bowl champ get disrespected like the Saints this year. They are 10-3 and when you hear people talk about the best teams in the NFL, they are barely mentioned. I feel that they should be favorites in the NFC. That offense is sick and the D is starting to turn teams over like they did last year. In my opinion, until the champs are dethroned they should be the favorites.

5. My Cowboys get the crown "Most Disappointing Team". This has to be the biggest waste of talent that I've seen this year. They are 1-6 at home. It is a shame that they did not play hard for Wade Phillips. Last time I checked you get paid to play this game. NFL players should not have to be motivated to play a game that their fans would kill to have the ability and opportunity to play. With that being said, I think that Jerry Jones would be a fool not to hire Jason Garrett as the new head coach. He is the closest thing to Jimmie Johnson that the Cowboys can get and this group needs a coach that will hold them accountable for there play on the field.

LeBron Hoopla

Let me be the first to say that I believe that LeBron James is one of the most exciting basketball players that I've ever seen. He is an unbelievable athlete with an uncanny basketball IQ. Now with that being said, I cannot for the life of me see what the big fuss is about with where he plays next year. Last time I checked, a LeBron led team has yet to win a championship. Hell a LeBron led team hasn't even won an NBA Finals game. I bet that a lot of people wouldn't even know what year the Cavs went to the Finals without googling it. That series was over before I finished my hot wings and Heineken. That's not an indictment on LeBron, because the fact that he led that Cavs team to the Finals is a testament to his greatness.
The point that I am trying to make is that we have become a sports society where winning championships is irrelevant. Chris Bosh is the prime example. He has yet to lead a team past the 1st round of the playoffs, yet gets so much media attention on where he will sign. To me, the most covenant free agent would be Dwayne Wade. I actually witnessed (no pun intended) him lead a group of washed up ring chasers (except Alonzo Mourning) to a championship.
Now I'm no fool. Anyone who gets LeBron James turns into an instant contender, but a primetime airing of the destination of a player that hasn't won anything is a little over the top. LeBron deserves every dollar that he receives from whatever team he is playing for (he may deserve more), but I think that the media has made sports more about their self promoting rather than the game itself. A couple of weeks ago we witnessed one of the most compelling and tightly contested Finals in recent history between the two most glorified franchises in the game, yet the most talked about teams over the past weeks have been the Knicks, Nets, Bulls, and Heat (2 of which are lottery teams) and players that haven't won anything. Maybe I'm old school, but to me the jury is still out on the King until he proves his case on the court.
